The National Weather Service in Honolulu forecasts breezy to windy trade winds through today and into Saturday, with light showers expected over windward and mauka areas and mostly dry weather for leeward regions. High pressure northeast of Hawaii and low pressure to the south and southwest are causing the strong trades, which have been strong enough "to continue the Wind Advisory over portions of Maui County and the Big Island." Winds are expected to gradually weaken from Sunday through Tuesday as the high pressure system moves east, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service reports that while stable conditions will persist, some uncertainty remains for the middle of next week as remnants of Tropical Storm Gil, expected to weaken into a remnant low east of Hawaii, could influence local weather. VFR conditions are expected to dominate, though brief MVFR conditions may occur from passing showers in windward and mountain areas. "With little change expected with the winds today, no change to the AIRMETs," the forecast noted, with AIRMET Tango still in effect for turbulence from trade winds.
A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through tonight for most waters around Maui and the Big Island, with possible expansions over the weekend. A High Surf Advisory is also in place until 6 PM HST for south-facing shores of all islands, while north-facing shores may see a small swell late this weekend from distant Typhoon Krosa. In addition, a Red Flag Warning is in effect until 6 PM HST due to gusty trade winds and low humidity, heightening wildfire risks in leeward areas, as stated by the National Weather Service.
