Houston remains under a heat advisory as temperatures reach the mid-to-upper 90s. According to FOX 26 Houston, heat index values are expected between 104 and 106 degrees on Sunday. Health officials advise residents to stay hydrated. Isolated showers are possible in some areas, but they are not expected to bring significant relief from the heat.
The National Weather Service reports a chance of rain beginning Monday with a 50 percent likelihood of showers. Rain chances increase through the week, reaching 70 percent by Thursday. Officials also advise the public to monitor the tropics for possible weather developments.
Hurricane Erin, now a Category 3 storm after briefly reaching Category 5 on Saturday, is bringing heavy rain and strong winds to Puerto Rico and is expected to affect the eastern Dominican Republic by midday Sunday. Forecasts from FOX 26 Houston show Erin will likely turn north and east later this week, avoiding a direct hit on the U.S. East Coast, but it will cause large swells and increase the risk of rip currents from Key West to Maine. A separate tropical wave is also being monitored, with a 10% chance of developing into a storm. If named, it would be called Fernand.
