Houston is setting the stage for its inaugural Fleet Week, a week-long celebration of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard that's making its debut in the Texas metropolis. Steering the way, a new website and logo for Fleet Week Houston have been launched, offering locals and visitors alike a sneak peek of what's to come this November. According to an announcement made by the City of Houston, fleetweekhouston.com is now live, equipped with a full itinerary which includes a range of activities from ship tours to community service projects.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire expressed his pride in hosting the event, asserting, "This will be the first time that Fleet Week is held in the city of Houston, and as mayor, I am proud to partner with the U.S. Navy and other representatives to host a fantastic week of events," as per the city press release. The celebration, slated for November 5-12, promises a blend of military tradition with a Houston twist, featuring parades, and live music to Texans fan zones and block parties. Mayor Whitmire rallies Houstonians to gear up for the event by checking out the new digital resources.
Fleet Week's activities are specially designed to foster community engagement and support for the military service members who will be in attendance. The website highlights various ways the public can get involved, from sponsorship to volunteering. Also, Houston will commemorate a couple of significant military milestones during the week: the Navy’s 250th anniversary and the Marine Corps' 250th birthday on November 10. "Houstonians will get to know our Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen, hear their real stories, and see exactly what the sea services do every day to keep America safe and strong," said Rear Adm. John W. Hewitt, underscoring the unique opportunity for community integration that Fleet Week offers, as mentioned in the same press release.
The heart of Fleet Week will likely be the Fleet Week EXPO, set for November 8 and 9 at Post Houston, brimming with interactive exhibits, food, entertainment, and expert panels. The EXPO, apart from showcasing Houston's local flavor and businesses, will double as the staging ground for shuttle bus transport to ship tours. As Reda Hicks, a steering committee co-chair and military spouse, stated, "And as a military spouse, I'm thrilled that we will have the opportunity to showcase what an incredible, military-friendly place Houston is to live, work, play, and serve together," as noted by the City of Houston. Those interested in sponsorships or exhibiting at the expo can find more information on the newly launched Fleet Week Houston website.
