Orlando is making strides to address its homeless crisis with an innovative approach that repurposes two buses into mobile shelters. As reported by CF Public, these vehicles, dubbed 407 Connect, were recently introduced to provide a total of 42 new beds. This project is a collaborative effort between the City of Orlando and the Christian Service Center for the Homeless, aimed at offering interim solutions for those without a place to sleep.

Each bus is equipped with 21 beds, amenities such as pod lighting, power outlets, and security onboard to ensure a safe environment. According to the executive director of the Christian Service Center, Eric Gray, this setup is not meant as a permanent living situation. "Nothing automatically restricts you from using the service, but we're looking for people who are active in their solutions to get housed. So, if you're just looking for a retirement place to live for the next 30 years, this is not for you," Gray stated, as per CF Public. The project also aims to serve families and accepts pets, acknowledging the importance of keeping loved ones together in times of need.

Orlando's Mayor Buddy Dyer spoke about the dire need for community involvement in tackling homelessness. "The challenge is it can’t just be somebody else’s problem. We simply can’t push homelessness and wish it will go away. We have to address it. We have to be part of the solution, we have to offer assistance to people in need of support, and we have to do it together as a community,” Dyer stated in an interview, as reported by MyNews 13. The mayor expressed optimism about housing over 400 people through these efforts within the next three years.

In addition to shelter, the buses are a conduit to vital services such as housing, employment, and rehab. Clients are warranted the flexibility to pursue daily activities and obligations, provided they return by 9 p.m.
