After a career spanning four-decades, Cooperative Extension Director Nancy Keith is setting her sights on retirement. Keith, who has held the position of Iredell County Extension Director since 2012, will be concluding her professional journey next Monday, according to a recent announcement by Iredell County.

During her tenure as director, Keith was instrumental in supporting local farmers and fostering agribusiness with programs that leaned on the latest in agricultural research – translating this knowledge into advancements in crop production, livestock management, and sustainable farming. County Manager Beth Milton, remembering Keith’s contributions, commented, "Nancy is a wonderful advocate for farmers and is known across the state for her knowledge." Her legacy, she says, "is one of unwavering commitment to improving the lives of Iredell County residents and, strengthening our agricultural community."

Before her directorship at Iredell County, Keith spent five years steering the cooperative extension programs in Yadkin County. This role saw her managing departments that spanned a gamut of agricultural domains from dairy and field crops to viticulture, pesticides, and horticulture. Keith began her illustrious career back in 1989 as an area specialized dairy agent after growing up on her family's farm in Iredell County and earning her stripes driving tractors and working in the fields.

A notable alumna of North Iredell High School and Mitchell Community College, Keith further solidified her agricultural prowess with a bachelor's degree in animal science and a master's degree in agriculture from North Carolina State University. Beyond her professional arena, Keith has been a steadfast community servant, participating in numerous roles – these include being president of the North Iredell High School Boosters, a chair of various committees at her local United Methodist Church, and an active member on the Iredell County Farm Bureau Board. In addition, she has dedicated 25 years on the courts, coaching JV and varsity girls basketball at North Iredell High School.

Keith's retirement was commemorated on August 15 at the County's Ag Resources Center, an event that marked the culmination of her steadfast service and the impact of her work within the community. Recognized for her unwavering advocacy and expertise, her departure from the role will leave big shoes to fill for those continuing the mission of Iredell County's Cooperative Extension.
