A Jacksonville man, 27-year-old Gregory Peter Paige, was fatally shot by police officers from the St. Marys Police Department in Georgia late last night. According to News4Jax, officers responded to Cumberland Oaks Apartments at around 11 a.m. following reports of threats but did not detail the nature of the threats made.
Upon arrival at the apartment complex located at 100 Mary Powell Drive, the officers encountered Paige. While the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is still investigating, First Coast News reports a woman had called 911, alleging Paige was making threats to kill her and that he grabbed her aggressively. After a "brief encounter" with Paige, officers opened fire, hitting him.
The details surrounding the encounter and the subsequent shooting are sparse. According to the St. Marys Police Department's spokesperson Lt. Ian Dent in a statement obtained by First Coast News, officers were attempting to enter an apartment to arrest Paige when they met him at the doorway, ultimately leading to the shooting. Reports by Action News Jax confirm the time of the shooting at approximately 11:06 p.m.
Medical aid was administered promptly after the shooting, with Paige being transported to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries, as reported by Lt. Dent to First Coast News.
