The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released details and footage of an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 30-year-old Brian Gillis on East 25th Street earlier this month. Gillis, who had a history of mental health issues, allegedly set fire to a neighbor's house and later informed them. Relatives contacted authorities for a mental health evaluation.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, officers, including one partnered with a mental health clinician, responded and were told Gillis had left. Later that morning, Officer Bumgarner saw Gillis and attempted to use a Taser. Gillis, holding a knife, did not comply with commands to drop it and continued running. The officer then fired his handgun, striking Gillis, who later died.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office stated the State Attorney's Office will review the incident, followed by JSO's internal review, a Response to Resistance Board evaluation, and a final decision by the Sheriff.
For transparency, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released a video briefing on its social media platforms and posted updates on its Transparency page. The video contains graphic content and is also available on JSO’s Facebook and YouTube channels. The investigation remains ongoing, with updates provided by JSO as new information develops.
