Get ready to hit the waves of sound at Union Square in downtown Hickory, as the Sails Original Music Series is bringing to town a fresh flavor that marries the sun-soaked vibe of surf with the depth of country, and a twist of something rich and strange. Next Friday, at 7 p.m., Joel Timmons is set to introduce his latest musical venture, Psychedelic Surf Country, at the latest installment of the city's free concert series. "It'll be surfy, rocky, funny…" according to Sails Music Coordinator Bob Sinclair's interview with the City of Hickory's website.
Timmons, who you might recognize from Sol Driven Train and his constant touring with various ensembles, is shaking up the scene with a "super group" he's gathered for the occasion. With a lineup of musicians he's met and worked with in Nashville, they're bringing a blend of genres that's all but common. Whether on the road, or collaborating with respected names across the American music spectrum, the guitarist, and now frontman of this project, has consistently turned heads and ear drums with his energetic performances, and heartful songwriting.
Protection Products, Inc. sponsors the event, whose aim is to put original music center stage. Original, in this context, means penned by the artist themselves. And Timmons has plenty of that, drawing from his Charleston, South Carolina roots to create tracks rife with oceanside chill and the honest earthiness of country living. People are encouraged to pack their lawn chairs or blankets, and take advantage of nearby food and beverage venues. But remember, no outside alcohol—local businesses within the social district will provide beverages in designated cups.
After the surf-set sun fades next Friday, the Sails Series is far from over. Mark your calendars because the local celebration of music continues with Jacoozy on September 12, Selwyn Birchwood on September 20, and New Translations capping it off on September 26. For those interested in learning more about the artists and upcoming performances, more information is available on the City of Hickory's website.
