The Kannapolis Police Department is expanding its force with the addition of six new officers, all of whom recently graduated from Basic Law Enforcement Training at Rowan Cabarrus Community College. This cohort of newly minted law enforcers will be assimilated into existing patrol squads, absorbing the wisdom and experience from seasoned officer mentors, as they take to the streets to serve the Kannapolis community, as per the City of Kannapolis.
Among the new recruits is Cameron Blackwelder, a local alumnus of Concord High School who steps into the force alongside his wife, Emily. Blackwelder extends the legacy of his parents, Chris and Michelle Blackwelder, by committing to the badge. In an effort to localize the force and strengthen community ties, it seems the Kannapolis Police Department is mindful of the familial connections that root officers in the fabric of the city they protect.
Experience and education arrive with Gabriel Chandler, who boasts a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Nyack College in New York. His high school days were spent pacing the halls of Atlantic City High School, marking a journey from the Atlantic seaboard to the heart of North Carolina. Chandler, now joined by his wife Jayleen and their two sons, James and Jeremiah, hopes to translate his academic foundation into tangible contributions to the force.
Xavier Gonzalez emerges from the sun-kissed avenues of East Beverly High School in California, bringing with him a sense of diversity and geographical breadth to the department. Having moved with his girlfriend, Patricia, and their two children, Genesis and Damian, Gonzalez's story reflects a broader American tale, one of crossing landscapes and forging new beginnings in pursuit of public service. Further enriching the department's profile, Ethan Ratliff joins the ranks as a graduate of Cox Mill High School, proudly representing his parents James and Nancy Ratliff of Concord, NC.
Pioneering online education pathways, Thomas Skinner's journey through Liberty University Online High School showcases an evolving landscape where traditional and digital realms coalesce in the preparation of today’s officers. Skinner is connected to the Carolina soil by his Oakboro roots, born to parents Tod and Sonya Skinner. Additionally, Eric Velazquez, a product of Ashbrook High School, now dons the uniform, bringing forward the aspirations and lessons instilled by his parents, Saul and Iris.
With these new additions, the Kannapolis Police Department not only grows in number, but also in the collective spirit and unique life stories each officer embodies.
