A recent incident in Kirkland's Totem Lake neighborhood has raised concerns over the use of dirt bikes on public roads. As reported by the City of Kirkland's official website, a 16-year-old dirt bike rider was seriously injured after colliding with a vehicle on July 29, 2025. The collision occurred when the teenager, riding an unlicensed dirt bike, struck a Mini Cooper while performing a wheelie on NE 132nd Street.
According to authorities, who responded to the scene around 2:45 p.m., no one inside the Mini Cooper was injured during the incident that sent the teen to Harborview Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Performing a thorough collision investigation, the road remained closed for several hours with the officers at the scene. This event underscores a troubling rise in reckless dirt bike usage by young riders in the area.
To address the community, the Kirkland Police Department has emphasized that dirt bikes and similar off-road recreation vehicles, such as electric dirt bikes, are subject to state regulations that prohibit unlicensed operation on public roads. They have seen an increase in reckless riding, particularly among youth. The teen's hospitalization following the traffic collision serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with such negligent behaviors.
