Residents around Lake Wylie can once again take a dip and enjoy watersports after the lifting of a swim advisory due, to harmful algae bloom (HAB) concerns. As previously reported by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, monitoring staff noticed the cyanobacteria-caused HABs in two coves, leading to restrictions for public safety. This situation has now improved to a point where officials have deemed the water safe for use.

The algae concern first came to light on August 15, sparking advisories that warned against engaging in a slew of water activities including swimming, fishing, and even touching algae mats. Especially at risk were children and pets, prompting a firm guidance to keep those most vulnerable from potentially toxic exposure. Now, that warning has lifted, as the Mecklenburg County's official announcement states.

Although the advisory has been retracted, expectations are that residents remain vigilant, recognizing that while one can't discern the dangerous nature of algae with the naked eye, they carry risk of illness when ingested. Following the removal of restrictions, the Storm Water Services has not halted its watchful eye over the waters of Lake Wylie, maintaining their surveying process to ensure the health and enjoyment of the lake by its visitors and residents alike.

Required actions upon accidental contact with harmful blooms were also initially outlined, as the advisory strictly mentioned that "If you accidentally come in contact with a harmful algae bloom, take the following actions: Wash thoroughly," and "Immediately seek veterinary care if your pet appears to stumble, stagger, collapse, or vomit uncontrollably after being in contact with the water."
