Students and parents within the Lakota Local Schools district are facing a disruption to their typical morning routine as a power outage has necessitated a two-hour delay for all schools on Thursday. The outage, striking at the district's Service Center, has largely affected transportation, rendering buses inoperable until the restoration of power. According to FOX19, district officials have informed parents that "We will continue to monitor conditions and keep you informed of any updates to this status through our usual communication channels."
The decision to delay comes as the outage not only halts buses but also affects the operational safety of the transportation process; buses cannot safely run without communications and the ability to refuel. As a result, programs such as half-day kindergarten, AM preschool, and Lakota Central AM classes have all been cancelled. On the flip side, PM preschool and PM Central classes will continue as scheduled, officials have confirmed.
The impact of the outage extends to the very fiber of morning logistics, as school start times and bus routes have all been shifted to accommodate the delay. District spokespeople mentioned to WLWT that all other classes beyond the morning cancellations will proceed, but on a modified schedule to account for the delay.
Amidst the service disruption, the district maintains a line of communication with parents and guardians, emphasizing the critical need for safety. "There are no radios for communication, no way for buses to refuel nor can routes be shared with drivers," Lakota Schools explained in a statement pulled from social media and detailed by LOCAL12. The lack of power at the service center thus not only halts the buses but also severs the lifeline of information normally shared between dispatch and drivers—necessitating the precautionary delays and cancellations.
