A 31-year-old man, Joseph Blodgett of Littleton, Colorado, has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of Felony Eluding and Reckless Endangerment, following a harrowing police chase in a stolen vehicle that led to a near catastrophe outside a bustling grocery store. According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Blodgett was apprehended on January 26, after Deputy Connor Lacey intervened to protect pedestrians when the suspect attempted to escape through a parking lot in reverse, eventually colliding with a patrol car.
Douglas County Deputy District Attorney Chase Helseth praised Deputy Lacey's prompt actions, which prevented potential injuries to civilians, stating, "We are grateful to the quick-thinking actions of Deputy Lacey who saved this offender from seriously hurting civilians,” as per the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. The incident took place at a King Soopers on the intersection of Highlands Ranch Parkway and University, where surveillance footage captured the tense moments of Blodgett's escape attempt and consequent crash into a law enforcement vehicle.
Underlining the gravity of the situation, Sheriff Darren Weekly emphasized the commitment to community safety and the rigorous response to those threatening it. He said, “Public safety is our top priority. When someone chooses to flee from the law and recklessly endangers the community, we will respond swiftly and decisively.” These sentiments were echoed by George Brauchler, District Attorney for the 23rd Judicial District, who delivered a stark warning in his statement, "If you choose to run from Douglas County law enforcement, bring a toothbrush and say goodbye to your loved ones. Our goal will be to put you in a place where you cannot threaten the safety of the community. That means incarceration. It is easier to pull over and take your medicine like a man," as obtained by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
