St. Johns County is currently witnessing the construction of a significant road expansion along County Road 2209, with efforts aimed at enhancing traffic circulation and managing the demands of a growing population. The project, as detailed by St. Johns County Office of Public Affairs, involves the creation of a new four-lane corridor linking Silverleaf Parkway and State Road 16, set to improve the flow of movement in the county's northern area.
The construction in focus is a segment of the CR 2209 Central Project that, upon completion, will stretch a full 7.7 miles from County Road 210 to State Road 16. Alongside its four-lane divided highway design, the project reserves an expansive 200 feet of right-of-way which anticipates long-term transportation demands. Duane Kent, the County Engineer for St. Johns County Public Works, highlighted that this new segment would extend "from Silverleaf Parkway all the way down to International Golf Parkway and then further down to State Road 16," making it a four-lane thoroughfare akin to the structure north of Silverleaf Parkway, as he told St. Johns County Office of Public Affairs.
The initiative kicked off in Spring 2024 and has made progress, reaching over the halfway mark in its construction. The county aims to round off the expansion by Summer 2026, offering local residents the prospect of less congested commutes, especially during peak hours. “We get stuck in traffic in those peak hours—AM and PM—and this will help with that commute as you travel through the County,” Kent conveyed in an interview with the St. Johns County Office of Public Affairs.
Complementing the county’s efforts is the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which has thrown in several million dollars towards the infrastructure enhancement. With an explicit commitment to strategic transportation investment, regional mobility, and the construction of efficient infrastructure, St. Johns County is steering towards not only addressing the immediate challenges of congestion but also fostering an adaptable framework for society's evolving needs.
