Following a month-long investigation, authorities have arrested 28-year-old Efrain Villalobos in connection with the July 19 shooting of Fernando Ramirez outside an East Hollywood nightclub. Villalobos was taken into custody in Redondo Beach at approximately 1:15 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement obtained by ABC7. Law enforcement officials allege that Villalobos shot Ramirez, who had earlier driven his car into a crowd of people, injuring over 30.

The incident, which resulted in Ramirez being charged with 37 counts of attempted murder and 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, occurred outside The Vermont Hollywood club. Ramirez is accused of intentionally driving a Nissan Versa through a crowd after being ejected from the establishment, as confirmed by KTLA. More than 120 first responders attended the chaotic scene, treating injuries ranging from minor to serious, including fractures and lacerations, although there were no fatalities. A cellphone video later showed Ramirez being assaulted by bystanders before being shot by Villalobos.

Investigating officers believe the motivation behind the ramming may have been revenge, possibly fueled by alcohol, according to senior law enforcement officials speaking to ABC7. Following his arrest, Ramirez was also subjected to toxicology tests to determine if his rampage was influenced by alcohol. On the other hand, Villalobos, now in police custody, faces felony charges, reports NBC Los Angeles.

Details regarding Villalobos's arrest remain sparse, but the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has stated that the case will be presented to the District Attorney's Office. Previously, the LAPD had released a photo of the accused shooter, requesting public assistance in locating him, FOX 11 reported. KTLA notes that Villalobos was booked for attempted murder and is being held without bail. Ramirez, meanwhile, has a previous criminal history, including at least 11 criminal cases that range from misdemeanors to felonies, and was on parole at the time of the incident.
