A 31-year-old man was fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire with four Milwaukee police officers, as Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman described during a late Saturday night news conference. The incident, as reported by JSONLINE, occurred at around 7 p.m. near the 2700 block of North 60th Street. Officers were responding to a tip about a vehicle connected to multiple business robberies located behind a residence when they encountered the armed man on a rear porch.
An active investigation has been launched after the armed suspect refused to comply with several police commands to drop his weapon and gunfire ensued. According to a statement obtained by FOX6Now, "The suspect and four officers then exchanged gunfire. The suspect died." It remains uncertain if the suspect's death was a result of self-inflicted wounds or police gunfire, further clouded by the recovery of his gun at the scene.
The officers involved, a 29-year-old with 11 years of service, a 46-year-old with 21 years, a 36-year-old with eight years, and a 30-year-old with five years, are now on administrative duty as per routine protocol in the wake of police shootings. Footage from the incident, as detailed by Chief Norman, is expected to be made public in 15 days, as reported by FOX6Now.
The investigative responsibilities have been taken up by the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, with the Brookfield Police Department leading the charge. No officers were reported harmed during the altercation. As indicated by WTMJ, "Four officers discharged their weapons, and will be placed on administrative duty during the investigation, which will be lead by Brookfield Police."
