Early morning yesterday, a tragic incident unfolded as the Cleveland Division of Fire recovered a man from a submerged vehicle in Lake Erie, leading to his death. According to News 5 Cleveland, fire crews were dispatched to the East 9th Street Pier around 2:40 a.m., where they discovered the vehicle about 100 feet offshore with its tail lights on. Divers reached the vehicle and retrieved the man, who was then pronounced dead at the scene following unsuccessful CPR attempts.
The victim, identified as 22-year-old Mwamba Tyler Robertson, was brought to dry land where Cleveland EMS officially pronounced him deceased, as detailed in WKYC. Divers conducted an additional search to ensure no other victims were underwater. The car was clear, and authorities later confirmed there were no additional passengers involved in the incident.
Technical rescue efforts were undertaken by Cleveland Fire's Technical Rescue 1 unit which dispatched divers to swim to the vehicle. Assistance was also provided by a fire boat equipped with forcible entry tools, necessary for the operation. "Rescuers pulled the man from the car and began CPR aboard the fireboat before bringing him to shore," reported cleveland.com, capturing the urgency and precision of the rescue team's response.
The circumstances that led to the vehicle's plunge into the watery depths remain unclear as investigations continue. The Cleveland Division of Fire has not speculated on what might have caused the incident. They are working in conjunction with local authorities to piece together the events that night. Further information will be disclosed as the investigation progresses, providing some clarity on this somber event that has occurred off the pier.
