The Mankato Police and Fire department has had a successful run with its Cops & Bobbers program this summer, engaging local youth in an adventurous blend of learning and outdoor activities. According to a social media post from the department, the initiative is more than just casting lines and reeling in fish – it's an exercise in community bonding and education.
Throughout the program, kids had the opportunity to refine their fishing techniques, learn about the different species that inhabit local waters, and receive important guidance on water safety from the DNR. The experience was not just impactful for the children but also for the School Resource Officers who hosted these events, demonstrating a side of law enforcement dedicated as much to mentoring as to monitoring. Yet, providing more than just a hands-on approach to outdoor education, each fishing session concluded with a shared meal in the park.
Community engagement programs like Cops & Bobbers represent a grassroots effort by police departments to build trust and foster positive relationships with the communities they serve. Recognizing the value of these interactions, the Mankato Police and Fire expressed gratitude to the sponsors and community partners who contributed to making Cops & Bobbers not just an activity, but a highlight of the summer for the participating kids.
