In August 2024, Massachusetts resident Erica Kahn was exposed to a bat while visiting Arizona with her father, leading to a series of rabies vaccinations. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, Kahn had recently lost her job and health insurance, and the health plan she purchased from Innovative Partners did not cover the treatment because of a 30‑day waiting period, leaving her with more than $20,000 in medical bills.

In an interview with 12News, Erica Kahn described the bat encounter, saying, “It was both very gross and startling.” She said the bat briefly touched her mouth, and on her father’s advice, who is a doctor, she began post-exposure prophylaxis. Kahn noted she had declined COBRA coverage because of its cost and is now facing high medical bills. She is seeking relief through appeals and a GoFundMe account.

Kahn’s case points to concerns about healthcare accessibility and medical debt. The California Department of Insurance recently issued a cease and desist order against Innovative Partners, accusing the company of misleading practices related to healthcare coverage. While continuing her appeals, Kahn said she is using her experience to call for more transparency in health insurance.
