Starting around September 5, Maui’s Department of Water Supply will use water from Hamakuapoko Wells 1 and 2. This will supplement the Upcountry water system, the County of Maui’s official website says.

Maui County will use well water for the Upcountry system because Piʻiholo Reservoir has low surface water and the region is in drought. The well water will be regularly tested to meet state and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency health standards. Most of Maui is experiencing moderate to severe drought, and below-normal rainfall is expected across all Hawaiian Islands in the coming month, as reported by the County of Maui.

The Department of Water Supply is monitoring the Upcountry water system, which serves Upper and Lower Kula, Makawao, Pukalani, Hāliʻimaile, and Haʻikū. Supplementary wells will be used as needed to prevent water shortages. For general questions, visit the Department of Water Supply website. Health-related questions can be directed to the Maui District Office of the state Department of Health at (808) 984-8200, as stated by the County of Maui.
