Mecklenburg County Public Health, in a partnership move with the BOPlex, recently made a definitive stride in a favor of nursing mothers with the unveiling of a new Mamava Lactation Pod. This installation provides a private and comfortable environment for mothers to breastfeed or pump during events at the venue, which encompasses Bojangles Coliseum and Ovens Auditorium.
The new amenity aligns with current efforts to make public spaces friendlier to breastfeeding families. "We're excited for this new partnership to support breastfeeding families attending BOPlex events," Dr. Raynard Washington, Public Health director, stated in a release. He emphasized that such facilities play a critical role in encouraging breastfeeding, which can lead to a plethora of health benefits for both babies and mothers.
Owned by the City of Charlotte and managed by the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA), the BOPlex is a notable player in the Charlotte community. "At the CRVA, our commitment is to deliver memorable customer experiences that reflect the best of Charlotte’s hospitality," Bryan Miller, Vice President of Venues for the CRVA, told Mecklenburg County. The lactation pod not only meets the needs of families but is also a testament to the CRVA's dedication to creating an inclusive and memorable experience for all event attendees.
Assistant health director for population health, Dr. Kimberly Scott, also lauded the effort, remarking that "Ensuring access to private breastfeeding spaces helps to keep parents, families and babies in our community healthy." The health benefits attributed to breastfeeding, such as reduced risks of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, and even sudden infant death syndrome in babies, have been a major driving force behind the creation of such spaces. Moms also stand to gain, with a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.
