In a distressing case that culminated in a hefty prison sentence, Jonathan Gonzalez-Reyes, a 39-year-old man originally from Mexico, will spend the next 23 years behind bars for his crimes involving child sexual abuse material (CSAM). As reported by the United States Attorney's Office, Gonzalez-Reyes was found guilty of producing, distributing, and possessing explicit material of a minor following a three-day trial.
A statement obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office detailed that after befriending the 13-year-old victim in February 2021 and providing her with alcohol, Gonzalez-Reyes, and Nanci Jasmin Castillo, his co-defendant, sexually assaulted her while she was under the influence of Xanax. Overpowered by the effects of the substances, the assault was documented by the attackers through photographs and videos.
Gonzalez-Reyes has been in custody since June 2024 and was sentenced by United States District Judge David O. Carter. The judge also ordered him to pay $3,000 in restitution to the victim. Besides the appalling crimes of assault and production of CSAM, evidence showed that Gonzalez-Reyes sent copies of the material to Castillo, which further substantiates his distribution charge.
Hunted down by a phone search and cloud-based evidence, child sexual abuse material depicting the victim alongside the defendants was discovered by law enforcement in Gonzalez-Reyes' phone and Castillo's iCloud account. Castillo, who has herself been serving federal custody time since June 2024, admitted guilt to one count of production of child pornography on February 5, even though she was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison after Judge Carter mandated her restitution payment in July.
This case was investigated by the FBI with the assistance of the Anaheim Police Department, the Los Angeles Regional Human Trafficking Task Force, the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, and ZOE International. The prosecutorial efforts were led by Assistant United States Attorney Chelsea Norell of the Major Crimes Section and Special Assistant United States Attorney Blake Hannah of the General Crimes Section.
