A Mexican national with a lengthy history of illegal reentries into the United States has once again faced the consequences of flouting immigration laws. In a recent development reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Hawaii, Navor Salas Cruz, 52, was sentenced to a 54-month prison sentence for illegal reentry after ten prior removals and three illegal reentry felony convictions. According to the Department of Justice statement released on Wednesday, Salas Cruz pleaded guilty to the charge earlier this year on April 4.

The cascade of Salas Cruz's legal troubles seemingly poured on after an arrest in 2024 in Kauai for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. Having been sent back to Mexico ten times between the years 1997 and 2020, his track record also includes three prior driving while under the influence arrests and fourteen arrests for contempt of court. The U.S. Attorney’s Office indicated Salas Cruz’s criminal history stretches beyond the illegal reentries, encompassing convictions for abuse, assault, violating protective orders, and illegal firearms and ammunition possession.

According to the Department of Justice, U.S. District Judge Derrick K. Watson, overseeing the sentencing, expressed his doubts regarding Salas Cruz's understanding of the legal system. Judge Watson stated, "It's clear you do not respect our laws," a sentiment echoed in the convict's extensive record of lawbreaking. Furthermore, Watson noted that over the past 25 years, Salas Cruz has "learned precious little," having repeatedly put public safety in jeopardy.

Acting U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson emphasized the judicial system’s approach to immigration violations following the sentencing. “This prosecution and lengthy sentence deliver the clear message that when you come to Hawaii as an illegal alien and repeatedly violate our nation's laws, you will be federally prosecuted and sentenced to a long period of imprisonment,” Sorenson said, as per the Department of Justice.

Salas Cruz's case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives as part of Operation Take Back America. The initiative targets illegal immigration and transnational criminal activity. Assistant U.S. Attorney Darren W.K. Ching led the prosecution, in coordination with broader national enforcement efforts.
