An attorney is under investigation for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into Central Michigan Correctional Facility during a visit with an incarcerated client. The incident, which took place on Monday, August 4, was observed by Michigan Department of Corrections' (MDOC) staff, as noted in several local news reports.

Following the suspect interaction between the attorney and client, officers reportedly searched, uncovering 211 strips of paper film suspected to be Suboxone, a medication for opioid addiction, along with 68 grams of a brown waxy substance and 45 grams of white powder. A subsequent search of the attorney’s vehicle led to the discovery of additional contraband, including more Suboxone strips and white powder. "This recovery protected countless individuals from potential illness, overdose, or violence associated with the sale of these drugs or from those under the influence," MDOC Director Heidi Washington was quoted to CBS News Detroit.

MDOC has since involved the Michigan State Police in the investigation, furthering to ensure the responsibility of both the attorney and the inmate. As the investigation continues, the names of the involved parties have not been released, adhering to the ongoing nature of the case. "As the nature of contraband continues to evolve, the department continues to implement effective strategies to deter and halt such illegal activities," Correctional Facility Administration Deputy Director Jeremy Bush said, per WNEM.

These measures include the recent introduction of new technologies such as body scanners, package scanners, and methods to verify legal mail, which are deployed to counter smuggling attempts. "The recent introduction of new technologies and policies will further our fight against these crimes and help save lives," Bush elaborated to WNEM. Amid the increasing effort to reduce contraband, MDOC has also improved its search procedures and staff training and has invested more in intelligence activities.

As this case is ongoing, MDOC has held off on releasing more details to the public. The prisoner, according to ABC12, is facing discipline and an investigation per department policy. MDOC is remaining vigilant in its approach to mitigating the risks and dangers posed by contraband in correctional facilities across Michigan. This latest incident underscores the ongoing battle facilities face in maintaining security and order.
