In what could only be described as a seamless fusion of precision and compassion, the Millington YMCA lifeguards exhibited professionalism of the highest order during a critical incident in mid-August. As detailed in a recent social media post by the Millington Fire Department, a man found himself in dire straits in the facility's indoor pool on August 16, 2025. The lifeguards, with no room for hesitation, leapt into action, pulling the man from the water and initiating emergency lifesaving procedures. Their interventions were crucial, buying precious time before the arrival of first responders. Millington Fire Department acknowledged the adept response of these individuals in a public recognition ceremony attended by Mayor Larry Dagen.
When the Millington Fire Engine 332 and Battalion 23 arrived, they found that the lifeguards had already administered a round of chest compressions and two rescue breaths. The victim, who had regained consciousness during the second round, was then tended by Millington Engine 332, Millington Battalion 23, Shelby County Fire Squad 4, and Shelby County Unit 64. Impressively, the ordeal, from the 9-1-1 call to the patient's transport to Methodist North, spanned a mere 12 minutes, a timeline that likely contributed significantly to the positive outcome.
The incident has since served to underscore the value of swift and decisive action in emergencies. The Millington Fire Department's social media post further lauded the efforts of all involved, stating, "The swift and selfness response exemplifies the highest standard of the lifeguard and Fire/EMS professions and reflects the spirit of service within the Millington community."
Privileged to make a full recovery, the patient returned to participate in a ceremony where both Lifesaving Proclamations and YMCA Lifesaver awards were bestowed upon the lifeguards. In a display of mutual gratitude and community, the man, dressed in a blue shirt, was pictured standing alongside his rescuers, Mayor Dagen, and YMCA executive management.
