Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has declared a state of emergency due to severe flooding caused by record rainfall. The county has experienced over 10 inches of rain, which has overwhelmed drainage systems and caused property damage. More rain is expected, which may worsen the flooding, according to the Milwaukee County.
"Flooding is still an active emergency situation across Milwaukee County, and we are expecting more rain today and into this evening. Our top priority is the life and safety of Milwaukee County residents," said Crowley. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, check on vulnerable people, and call 211 to report property damage like flooded basements or damage from lightning. An Emergency Operations Center is open to coordinate response efforts during the storm, as reported by the Milwaukee County.
Authorities advise residents to avoid floodwater because it may be contaminated or have electrical dangers, avoid driving on flooded streets, and wear protective gear when handling debris. Residents should unplug appliances during power outages and protect food. They are also asked to limit water use to reduce strain on the sewage system. To report flooding or downed trees, contact local government or use the city’s online service. Crowley said, "I am thankful to our first responders, law enforcement partners, social services workers, and neighbors who are lending a helping hand during a challenging time. We will get through this together, Milwaukee," as stated by the Milwaukee County.
