In the wake of a devastating mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School and subsequent legal examinations revealing weaknesses in Minnesota's firearm regulations, Senator Ron Latz has indicated a strong move toward reforming gun laws and bolstering mental health initiatives in the 2026 legislative session. As chair of the Senate Judiciary & Public Safety Committee, Latz aims to put gun violence, hate prevention, and mental health concerns at the forefront of the state's agenda, as he mentioned in an announcement reacting to the recent violence.
"Wednesday’s tragedy underscores something that is all too clear: gun violence is a public health crisis in our state and must be addressed with the urgency our children, families, and communities expect," Sen. Latz said, noting the toxic mix of firearms, hate, and mental health problems that seem to have played a part in the recent school shooting, Senate DFL reports. Among the initiatives proposed by Sen. Latz are the closure of the “Ghost Gun” loophole, a public campaign on Extreme Risk Protection Orders, and a push for research at Hamline University aimed at gun violence prevention.
Additional measures by Latz include a comprehensive review of Minnesota’s anti-hate and bias crime laws, the creation of a Civil Commitment Coordinating Position within the Attorney General’s Office to address the links between mental health crises and the criminal justice system; and the controversial step of banning assault rifles and high-capacity magazines all of which serve as a testament to a desire to reshape state policy around public safety and the welfare of its citizens.
The Senator's proposals have been met with support from constituents who are looking for decisive actions from their legislators in the wake of such violence, "Minnesotans strongly support legislative action on gun violence prevention, and we remain committed to addressing this and other serious public safety issues facing our state," Senator Latz added, elucidating the gravity of the matter and the bipartisan work that is anticipated to move these proposals forward, according to a statement from Senate DFL.
