To fortify the community against wildfires, Moraga-Orinda Fire District, supported by East Bay Regional Parks and Contra Costa County Fire, is setting a controlled burn on Monday morning. The prescribed fire project, hosted at Moraga Geologic Hazard Abatement District (GHAD), aims to produce a buffer zone of 35-50 feet along Fay Hill Road just East of Painted Rock. Often called a "black line," this measure offers firefighters a strategic advantage during potential wildfire events.
According to the social media post from the fire district, the controlled burn is also expected to promote the regrowth of native grasses. In preparation for the event, the air quality is a paramount concern, hence the involvement of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District in planning and executing the burn. Residents should consider keeping their windows and doors shut between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM on Monday to minimize smoke infiltration into homes.
Should there be a shift in the conditions suitable for a safe prescribed fire, the MOFD has assured the community that the project will be rescheduled. Updates regarding the burn or any changes to the schedule will be made available through their official Facebook page, ensuring residents stay informed.
