A carjacking spree that sent waves of disruption across multiple cities ended with the suspect in critical condition and facing a litany of charges. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, Everett Chief of Police Paul Strong, and Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble announced an ongoing investigation into the chaotic events, which began yesterday afternoon in Everett and involved a series of attempted and successful carjackings by 33-year-old Admilson Vizcaino of Malden.
The trouble started around 12:45 p.m. when Medford Police were alerted to a man behaving erratically at a local gas station. Vizcaino fled before police arrival, subsequently leading to a "be on the lookout for" alert. Stoneham Police tried stopping Vizcaino at about 1:00 p.m. but he failed to stop, and, a shoplifting incident at a Billerica 7/11 involving Vizcaino's black Chevrolet SUV was reported at around 2:00 p.m., according to an official report by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
Later, Malden Police were informed by a family member that Vizcaino was at a residence in Malden. He managed to give chase once again, leading officers into Everett. His vehicle crashed into multiple cars on Broadway near Mystic Street, where he attempted to hijack more vehicles while armed with a knife. Despite being tasered by state troopers, Vizcaino continued his escape on foot and eventually commandeered a garbage truck at knifepoint, prompting an Everett Police Officer to discharge his firearm and arrest Vizcaino after another crash, as detailed in the DA's office statement.
Vizcaino now faces charges including four counts of attempted armed carjacking, two counts of armed carjacking, assault with a dangerous weapon, armed assault to rob and leaving the scene of a collision. Investigators found four canisters of gasoline in Vizcaino's vehicle, and street surveillance recorded him dropping a cigarette lighter during the mayhem. His arraignment will be scheduled at a later date, and as the investigation continues, he remains hospitalized in critical condition, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office reported.
