To bolster the sense of safety within the Navajo Nation, President Buu Nygren met with members of the FBI to discuss strategies, as reported by the Office of the President of the Navajo Nation. The emphasis was on the visibility of law enforcement, with the Navajo Police working alongside FBI agents to create an environment where potential criminals might think twice. Nygren stressed the need for a strong, consistent presence that would lend to the community's comfort and deterrence of crime.
The meeting, which took place last Saturday, included FBI Special Agents Heith R. Janke, Matthew J. Schaeffer, and Tyler Woods from the Phoenix Field Office who were joined by Navajo officials Micheal Henderson, Malcolm Leslie, and Leonard Williams, all voices converging in a dialogue about community safety and cultural respect—with President Nygren highlighting the importance of honoring Navajo customs and elders in law enforcement processes. Special Agent Woods, hailing from Page, Arizona, added a personal note, "We don't joke about owls and snakes," affirming the agents' cultural sensitivity in their operations, as per the Office of the President of the Navajo Nation.
According to the official statement, Nygren underscored that the collaboration with the FBI is key in tackling significant crimes, including drug and human trafficking, along with bootlegging, which are issues of concern within the Nation. "Knowing that the FBI partners with us shows the Navajo Nation is a safe place to be," he emphasized.
