Residents and visitors on Ocracoke Island will finally be able to traverse NC12 once more as the North Carolina Department of Transportation has announced the road's reopening. The critical thoroughfare, which had been closed due to Hurricane Erin's impact, is set to reopen today at 5 p.m., a welcome development for those relying on the route for travel and commerce. The reopening signifies a stride toward normalcy following the hurricane's disruptive visitation to the region.
According to a social media post by NCDOT NC12, the Hatteras-Ocracoke vehicle ferry is also gearing up to resume service this evening, aligning with the road's availability, with an amended schedule for tonight and, a return to a regular summer ferry schedule starting Tuesday. This restored connectivity is crucial for those on the island, where transportation options are limited and frequently at the mercy of coastal weather patterns.
Intending travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution as some water and a thin skim of sand may still cover the highway; reminders of Erin's recent presence. The NCDOT urges drivers to be mindful of the residual effects of the storm, which could pose challenges for the unwary. Despite the road opening, crews will continue working to restore the highway to its full capacity, requiring added vigilance from those making their way across the affected stretches.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has thanked the public for its patience during the cleanup process. "Thank you for your patience as we worked to overcome Hurricane Erin's mess," the department said in a statement.
