As Labor Day weekend approaches, outdoor enthusiasts are gearing up for end-of-summer adventures. For those in Nevada County planning to traverse the expansive off-highway vehicle (OHV) accessible areas, take heed: The Nevada County Sheriff's Office is amping up patrols to ensure that these recreation spaces are preserved and enjoyed responsibly.
In an announcement that may dissuade some from venturing off the designated paths, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office has indicated they will increase OHV patrols from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, coinciding with the surge of visitors during Labor Day weekend. "The Sheriff’s Office utilizes a special fleet of OHV vehicles, including UTVs, SnoCats, dirt bikes, e-bikes, and a 4x4 Jeep to patrol off the beaten path, to enforce laws beyond the paved roads, and protect those recreating in Nevada County," the NCSO stated. The county's natural terrain is a hotspot for OHV enthusiasts, and while some areas are authorized for such use, areas belonging to NID, PG&E, Sierra Pacific Industries, and private citizens often bear the brunt of unauthorized trespassing, environmental damage, and other legal infractions.
The Sheriff's Office strategy is in direct response to an increase in public complaints regarding illegal OHV operations, which often involve trespassing, unsafe practices, environmental harm, vandalism, and littering in unauthorized areas. OHV areas across Nevada County, including the Tahoe National Forest and Mother Lode Ranger District, are frequent subjects of these grievances. With the area spanning over 900 square miles of off-road territory, the need for law enforcement presence is significant.
