New Braunfels looks to boost its economic prospects with more than $4 million in development projects, as the City Council gave the green light to two major initiatives earlier this week. According to a report by New Braunfels City, this investment is aimed at expanding educational opportunities and updating critical floodplain data to better manage natural disaster risks.
Funding close to $3.8 million is directed to the expansion of the Northeast Lakeview College (NLC) campus, an extension of Alamo Colleges that has seen significant growth since its inception. Initially opened with a modest 125 students, NLC's enrollment climbed to 400, necessitating the purchase of a new facility and additional land for what promises to be a substantial expansion. "The City’s investment in Northeast Lakeview College will generate more than $280 million in regional economic output over the next decade, producing nearly 600 skilled graduates earning about $82,000 annually," said Jeff Jewell, Director of Economic and Community Development, as reported by the City of New Braunfels.
The other project with City Council's stamp of approval, along with $240,000 of funding, involves the Dry Comal Creek Floodplain Remapping Project. This essential work will update decades-old FEMA floodplain maps, reflecting the latest developments and data to help manage flood risks. The project's urgency was underscored by the recent summer floods in the Texas Hill Country.
"Although this remapping project began well ahead of the devastating floods seen this summer in the Texas Hill Country, that tragedy highlights the importance of keeping these maps up to date," Garry Ford, Director of Transportation and Construction Services, underscored the necessity of timely updates; his statement to New Braunfels City sites the the new mapping will recalibrate the community's understanding of their floodplain, fostering smarter development and emergency planning.
