In a decisive show of legislative strength, the City Council overruled the mayor's veto regarding an amendment to the Home Rule Charter. During their regular meeting last Thursday, as reported by the City Council New Orleans news release, members present pushed through the ordinance No. 35,166 with a unanimous vote. The council's agenda also featured the approval of a partnership to enhance the Lafitte Greenway's recreational appeal, a motion passed without dissent. Alongside these official acts, a slate of special elections was set for November 15, eagerly counting on voters to decide on numerous bond propositions.
Ray'Mon Lewis, a floor nurse at Ochsner's main campus hospital who works from a wheelchair, not letting his physical circumstances limit his capacity to provide care, was honored by the City Council New Orleans. The Council, in the spirit of recognizing local talents and volunteers, also celebrated the winners and dedicated participants of the 116th NAACP National Convention ACT-SO Awards. These annual awards herald the achievements of high school students who excel in various fields, ranging from digital arts to culinary arts.
Before the gavel opened the official meeting, talks on the French Quarter Economic Development District Trust Fund took the floor. In a city preempting the turns of the economy, a resolution reached the table calling voters to weigh-in on the renewal of a .245% sales tax specifically for the District's continued prosperity this November 15. In a turn of collective readiness, NOLAReady volunteers were commended for their preemptive actions in sandbagging initiatives prior to the threatening Invest 93L storm, underscoring the City's proactive community spirit, as reported by the City Council New Orleans.
Apart from legislative and fiscal matters, the City Council New Orleans session was an occasion to highlight the social fabric that holds the community tight. The retired Ms. Linda Lewis, as she turned 77, was not only celebrating a personal milestone but was also honored for her generous contributions to the community. Present at the meeting were figures like Director of Nursing Renata Schexnaydre and our hero in healthcare, the floor nurse Ray'Mon Lewis, both receiving the city's applaud for their commitment to nurturing bodies and souls.
