The City of New Orleans, in partnership with Loyola University, has launched a new initiative targeting sound management in the city's music venues. Announced by the Office of Nighttime Economy, the "Tune-Up Grant Program" aims to enhance the quality of live music experiences while addressing sound-related community concerns. The program provides financial aid and technical support for venues to improve sound systems and offers career-development opportunities for Loyola students in the realm of audio technology, according to the City of New Orleans.
Grants of up to $5,000 are being offered to small and mid-size music venues for sound mitigation projects. These funds help with acoustic treatments, decibel monitoring systems, and other crucial sound improvements, according to the City of New Orleans official website. Developed collaboratively with Loyola's Music Industry Studies program, the initiative is expected to serve dual purposes: to advance the local music scene – often struggling for both recognition and resources – and to nurture new talent via hands-on, educational experiences.
With the application window open from August 15 through September 15, venues looking to participate must undergo a consultation before they're eligible for the capital improvement funds, as outlined on the City of New Orleans website. The support will also extend beyond simple cash injections, pairing students from Loyola's new Audio Technology and Production course with venues to achieve tailored sound abatement solutions while reducing noise disturbances in surrounding neighborhoods.
Julia Heath from the Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy emphasized the importance of the city's music venues, sharing, "New Orleans is home to the best music in the world and the experience of going to a show in this city should reflect that," as reported by the City of New Orleans official website. Furthermore, Kate Duncan of Loyola's School of Music & Theatre Professions highlighted their commitment to experiential learning, stating, "Our students are amply prepared to tackle what the world throws at them when they 'learn by doing,'" suggesting Loyola graduates can be found working throughout the city's music industry due to such partnerships.
The "Tune-Up Grant Program" is not merely a response to the existing sound management issues faced by live venues. It also looks ahead, aiming to lessen the impact of noise on residents and enhancing the overall audial aspects of New Orleans' most famous export. City Councilmember Joseph Giarrusso, representing District A, has championed the cause, proudly announcing his role in ensuring the initiative was included in the 2025 City budget, appreciating its dual focus on supporting musicians and neighborhoods alike, as per the City of New Orleans.
