Drivers traversing the stretch of Interstate 5 between Chehalis and Centralia should brace for a change in their commute starting next week. Ramp meters are set to go live, aiming to ease the notorious traffic snarls that have long plagued this corridor. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), six new ramp meters will start operating from Monday, Aug. 18, to regulate the flow of cars onto the highway, reduce collision rates for tired drivers, and provide a better commute.

WSDOT has informed that after being installed, these meters underwent a period of data collection while remaining nonoperational. This phase of gathering 'sleeping data' was crucial for configuring the meters to respond appropriately to real-time traffic conditions. Once activated, these ramp meters, which will be turned on incrementally beginning at 13th Street/Parkland Drive, and then northward, are designed to let only one vehicle merge onto the highway at a time during peak traffic hours.

The ramp metering system operates with signals that turn green, allowing individual vehicles to proceed briefly. By controlling the entry of vehicles one by one, the system aims to minimize the bottlenecks and accidents that often arise from erratic merging. WSDOT clarifies that "These ramp meters let only one vehicle through per green light, with a short delay between each," stressing their goal to strike a balance between the needs of merging drivers and those already cruising the interstate.

Affected on-ramp locations include both northbound and southbound lanes on I-5 at strategic exits, like 13th Street/Parkland Drive, State Route 6/Main Street, and Chamber Way. These spots were chosen for intervention due to their impact on overall freeway efficiency and safety records.
