Millington residents can expect some new traffic patterns starting this Wednesday, August 6, due to the construction of a new middle school campus at Millington Intermediate School. In a social media post from the Millington, Tennessee Police Department, citizens were informed of the upcoming changes that will primarily affect arrival and dismissal times for those in the surrounding area.
The specified changes include the closure of Cuba Millington Road at Hwy 51 to all but school buses between 7:45 to 8:00 AM and 2:55 to 3:15 PM during school days, which may lead to increased congestion on nearby roads such as West Street and Wilkinsville Road. The post stated heavy traffic should be expected during these times. The Police are responding to these changes by deploying additional personnel to aid with traffic flow and ensure safety throughout the construction project.
According to the detailed letter that residents received, and which was also shared by the Police Department in the form of letter images attached to their announcement, the goal is to maintain a safe and orderly environment for students, parents, and local commuters. The letter also urges those not involved with the school to avoid using West Street during the peak hours of school traffic to help reduce unnecessary congestion.
The department's post highlighted the positive results anticipated from enduring these temporary inconveniences, stating that they "encourage all residents to keep in mind what we will have at the end, a return to a dedicated grades 6 to 8 middle school, a wonderful addition to the neighborhood, and a great new space for generations to learn in Millington." The new traffic patterns are expected to remain in place for the entire school year, indicating the community will need to adjust their travel habits for the long term.
