The debate over the future skyline of New York City's West Side is heating up with public hearings on the horizon for two major casino proposals, offering locals a chance to have their say. As reported by W42ST, residents and interested New Yorkers are marking their calendars for August 13 and 27, when they can voice support or concern regarding The Avenir and Caesars Palace Times Square casino bids, respectively.
Vying for a prime spot in the iconic Times Square, Caesars Palace Times Square outlines a vision of transformation while a swell of opposition from local groups suggests the plan could bring more harm than good to the community, conflict on the brewing, along with a worry that casinos will alter the character of Midtown. The locally-renowned Broadway theaters made their stance abundantly clear, displaying digital protests against the proposed casino in unison with Wednesday morning's rally; "No Times Square Casino" read the marquees of notable venues like the Majestic and the Palace, according to CBS News New York.
The controversial Caesars Palace project, partnered with SL Green, Caesars Entertainment, and Roc Nation seeks not only to bring gaming and entertainment but also purports to bolster community investments and public safety, Roc Nation's JAY-Z calling it “a once in a lifetime opportunity,” as per W42ST report.
Less conspicuous but no less important, The Avenir's proposal is championed by Silverstein Properties in collaboration with Rush Street Gaming and Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment; a $7 billion enterprise that isn't just about high stakes but envisions a 1,000-room Hyatt hotel, culinary delights from top-tier restaurateurs, and a commitment to affordable housing, boasting of partnerships with local nonprofits like Hudson Guild and Covenant House. The proposal's impact on Hell's Kitchen could be substantial, promising over 2,000 new apartments, out of which 25% will be designated as affordable housing, a move that could address some of the city's persistent housing issues.
Public hearings are a crucial part of the government's approval process for such developments, offering a platform for citizens' voices—both committees, as per their rules, vowing to consider all public feedback submitted either in-person or via email and mail equitably. The Caesars Palace Times Square Community Advisory Committee will convene today, and again in a subsequent public hearing scheduled for September; meanwhile, The Avenir's community input session is poised for August 27 at the Javits Center, with all proceedings streamed live on YouTube for broad access, W42ST details.
With the September 30 decision deadline fast approaching, the clock ticks for the Community Advisory Committees (CACs) of each proposal to reach a consensus; under current rules, a two-thirds majority is required for advancement to the next phase with the state’s Gaming Facility Location Board. Comprised of six members appointed by various city and state leaders—the stakes could not be higher nor the opinions more divided, as the public, CACs, and ultimately the state of New York decide on the bets placed for West Side's future.
