Four people were shot before dawn last Sunday when a robbery near a Bronx recycling business turned into a gunfight, with two armed suspects opening fire before fleeing in three separate vehicles. The attack unfolded around 5:45 a.m. on August 23 in the vicinity of 1641 East 233rd Street in the Eastchester section of the Bronx, according to police.
According to NYPD Crime Stoppers, a group of unidentified individuals approached another group near that address and began forcibly taking property from them. During the confrontation, two of the individuals from the first group displayed firearms and discharged them, striking four victims, police said. All of the attackers then fled the scene in three vehicles that traveled westbound on East 233rd Street, per NYPD Crime Stoppers.

The address itself sits along a commercial and industrial stretch of the Eastchester/Wakefield area, home to Alpha Recycling Inc., a catalytic converter and scrap metal recycling business, according to Visual Visitor. It is not the first time the property has drawn criminal attention: in March 2020, a suspect broke a ground-floor window at Alpha Recycling and cracked a safe to steal $30,000 in cash, as reported by the Bronx Times.
A Corridor With a History of Armed Robberies
The stretch of East 233rd Street has seen other violent robberies in recent months. In April, NYPD Crime Stoppers sought two armed suspects who robbed a group of teenagers in broad daylight and stole a moped in front of 642 East 233rd Street, just over a mile west of the site of last Sunday's shooting, Hoodline previously reported in its piece on the moped crew's gunpoint robbery.
The area falls under the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 47th Precinct, headquartered at 4111 Laconia Avenue, which patrols northern Bronx neighborhoods including Wakefield, Woodlawn, Williamsbridge, Baychester, Edenwald, and Olinville, according to the NYPD. The precinct has recorded a troubling trend heading into late August: shooting incidents there rose nearly 13% year-over-year, climbing to 18 reported incidents compared to 16 during the same period in 2025, per News 12 Bronx.
Violent Crime Trends Persist Despite Citywide Drops
The 47th Precinct also posted the steepest surge in felony assault complaints among all 12 Bronx precincts in mid-2025, with reported cases jumping 42.8% from 70 to 100 year-over-year, the Norwood News reported. That local spike stands in contrast to historic citywide lows in murders and shootings recorded earlier in 2026, underscoring how violent crime has remained concentrated in pockets of the northern Bronx even as broader trends improved.
Property crime targeting cars and auto parts has also been a persistent issue in the precinct. In April, the Bronx District Attorney and NYPD announced a 971-count indictment against 16 members of a theft ring operating across the borough, with 37 car and auto parts thefts occurring within the 47th Precinct alone, according to the Norwood News.
Potential Charges Suspects Could Face
Once identified and apprehended, the suspects could face some of the most serious charges under New York law. Forcibly stealing property while displaying or discharging a firearm constitutes Robbery in the First Degree under New York Penal Law § 160.15, a Class B violent felony punishable by up to 25 years in state prison with a mandatory minimum five-year sentence, according to FindLaw. Intentionally causing serious physical injury to another person with a deadly weapon also meets the standard for Assault in the First Degree under Penal Law § 120.10, which carries a potential sentence of up to 25 years.
Investigators have not said whether the two groups involved in the confrontation knew each other, nor whether the victims were targeted for specific business or personal property. The current medical conditions of the four people struck by gunfire have also not been disclosed.
