The U.S. Attorney's Office in the Northern District of Ohio recently disclosed a series of immigration enforcement actions, signaling the government’s ongoing efforts to address illegal reentry into the country. Three separate cases, all unconnected, have brought individuals from Honduras and Mexico to the fore.

According to a press release by the U.S. Department of Justice, Honduran national Edin Oneil Carrillos-Rodriguez, 36, faces charges for illegally reentering the U.S. after his most recent removal on Dec. 11, 2014. He was found in Vickery, Ohio, on July 25, without authorization from the Attorney General or the Secretary of Homeland Security. The charge, one count of illegal reentry, if convicted, could result in penalties determined by the court after reviewing factors such as the defendant’s criminal history, their role in the offense, and the nature of the violations, the USAO said.

Meanwhile, Vicente Lopez-Gomez, 37, a Mexican citizen, has already been sentenced to time served after pleading guilty to a charge of illegal reentry, a crime he committed following his removal back in 2016. Additionally, Aurelio Mariscal-Chavez, another 37-year-old Mexican citizen, received a similar sentencing by U.S. District Judge Jack Zouhary after also pleading guilty to the charge of illegal reentry after a prior deportation in February 2016. Both Lopez-Gomez and Mariscal-Chavez are currently detained, their deportation pending.

The investigations leading to these indictments were managed by a collaboration between U.S. Border Patrol-Sandusky Bay Station, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Despite the gravity of the charges, it's important to remember, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, "An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt," emphasized the USAO. The defendants are each entitled to a fair trial where the government will bear the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

These enforcement actions are part of the broader "Operation Take Back America", an initiative launched by the U.S. Department of Justice aimed at obstructing illegal immigration, dismantling cartels, and protecting communities from violent crime.
