Residents of Oak Ridge who are customers of the City of Oak Ridge Electric Department (CORED) will see an increase in their utility bills, a 2.75% rate adjustment that will begin in October 2025 to address the rising costs of service and infrastructure. In a recent public release, the Oak Ridge Utility Business Office Manager DeDe Wolfe indicated, per the City of Oak Ridge, "For the average residential customer, this change will mean an increase of approximately $3.50 per month on their electric bill."
The rate adjustment was announced as a necessary step for sustaining the local electric system, which is set for early October and is expected to be reflected in customer bills in late October or early November, and although it may not seem like much on an individual level, this uptick signals a broader trend of escalating utility costs amidst an economy grappling with perennial inflation and the demands for infrastructural modernization. In terms of when customers will begin to notice this change, CORED Interim Director Keith Atkins stressed the importance of the adjustment, saying to the City of Oak Ridge's news page, "As we continue investing in reliable service and maintaining the infrastructure that powers our community, these small adjustments are sometimes necessary."
This decision by CORED reflects a balancing act between maintaining affordability and ensuring the reliability and strength of the city's electric system, a sentiment echoed by Atkins in his statement about the rate change indeed, as costs for maintenance and infrastructure steadily climb, such increments in utility pricing are often passed down to the consumer to ensure that service levels remain unimpacted by the financial strain that might be caused by such expenses.
