The Mesquite Police Department in Texas recently announced the retirement of one of its long-serving officers, Michael Smith. Officer Smith is closing the chapter on a career that began with the department back in 2006. His tenure included roles across various units, from patrol duty to working in Criminal Investigations, specifically within the Forgery and Major Crimes units, as per the Mesquite Police Department.

Known for his extensive commitment to both the department and the community, Smith also took on the responsibility of a School Resource Officer (SRO), where he was notably active in building relationships with staff and students. While in service, Officer Smith managed to also work as a Federal Task Officer assigned to the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), which further diversified his experience within law enforcement. The Mesquite Police Department praised his efforts, stating, "We appreciate the dedication and professionalism you have exhibited your entire career."

Throughout his nearly two-decade career, Officer Smith has been acknowledged with multiple awards for his professional excellence. These accolades include a 2009 Certificate of Merit, 2011 CPA Officer of the Month, 2019 Elks Lodge Officer of the Year, and Civic Achievement Awards in both 2019 and 2020. Furthermore, he was honoured with the prestigious Sergeant H. Kent Tyler Officer of the Year Award in 2021—in addition to receiving 28 Letters of Commendation over his years of service with the department.
