The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves has announced the upcoming special deer hunts, which will take place across state nature preserves and scenic river lands. With the goal of managing burgeoning deer populations that threaten native plant communities, the division will offer archery hunts in 22 counties during the 2025-2026 hunting season, as detailed on the ODNR website.
Hunters interested in participating will need to not only attend a mandatory meeting for the specific preserve they aim to hunt in but also to fork over $5 for a lottery ticket—cash, thank you very much. This cash-only requirement is just one small hoop to jump through in a series that culminates in a lottery drawing that will determine who gets to take a shot at managing Ohio’s deer population.
It's not just about showing up and shelling out. Hunters must come equipped with a valid 2025-2026 hunting license before they can even think about purchasing a ticket for these draws. The rules for this year’s hunts dictate that some will require an adult hunting license, all of which is spelled out on the ODNR’s website for those playing at home to follow along.
Should Lady Luck shine upon them, successful entrants will then be expected to stay on for a mandatory pre-hunt meeting. Let's not skip over the part where you can bring a hunting pal along, who, mercifully, won’t have to endure the drawing or subsequent orientation session. It's worth noting that separate lottery tickets will need to be purchased by those looking to participate in the Lake Katharine gun, muzzleloader, and archery hunts. It seems ODNR is making it as easy as possible to heavily regulate, while still making it somewhat easy to apply and potentially hunt.
The names will be drawn at random, and those chosen will then be assigned a specific time slot for their hunt. This lottery system, with its mandatory meetings and cash-only ticket purchases, indicates a clear effort to maintain a tightly controlled and responsible approach to wildlife management in Ohio’s scenic areas.
