A fatal crash shut down Interstate 70 West at Hamilton Road in Columbus late Friday, according to the Columbus Division of Police, snarling one of the city's busiest eastside freeway junctions just as the evening commute got underway.
The closure affected the westbound lanes of I-70 at the Hamilton Road interchange, while eastbound I-70 remained open in the same area, according to OHGO traffic camera footage cited by WSYX. No further details on the cause of the crash, the number of vehicles involved, or the identity of the victim had been released as of the station's report.
The interchange, where State Route 317 (Hamilton Road) meets I-70 at Exit 107, is a heavily traveled freeway junction connecting Whitehall, Columbus, and southeast Franklin County, according to Wikipedia. It's also a stretch of road with a troubled recent history. In November 2017, a 58-year-old driver died on I-70 near Hamilton Road after drifting into the median and striking a post supporting an overhead highway sign, as reported by 10TV, with police at the time investigating whether a medical event caused the driver to lose control.
A Corridor With a Violent Recent Past
The South Hamilton Road area has seen more than its share of severe incidents in the past year and a half. A May 2025 collision along the corridor near the former Eastland Mall left one person dead and another critically injured after a driver fled the scene, according to NBC4 WCMH-TV, in a case that required an extensive crash investigation and temporary road closures.
Just last month, on August 7, a vehicle crash near the South Hamilton Road exit off I-70 escalated into an armed confrontation and shootout with Columbus police officers on nearby Errington Road, according to 10TV. An officer was shot in that incident, and a 32-year-old suspect was indicted on 16 charges on August 19.
