An Ohio man, Dannie Wireman, 44, of Edon, has been handed a sentence exceeding six years in prison following his guilty plea on firearms charges. As the Department of Justice reported, on July 30, U.S. District Judge James R. Knepp ordered Wireman to serve 77 months for being a felon in possession of a firearm and receipt or possession of an unregistered firearm. Upon his release, Wireman is expected to be under supervised release for three years.
Previously convicted of burglary in Indiana in 2009, Wireman was legally barred from acquiring or handling firearms. Despite this, a social media trail on Facebook showed him flouting the law, where, seized by federal agents in his house, a startling assortment of 22 long guns and a cache of ammunition underscored the severity of his indiscretions. Wireman conducted transactions involving items as diverse as a beagle hunting dog, a snowmobile, and a racecar, all in exchange for firearms.
As per court documents, these transactions were flagrant and public, with Wireman posting photos of his firearms laid out on a bed to entice potential traders. One such post mentioned by the Justice Department asked if anyone in a Facebook group would exchange a shotgun for a beagle hunting dog. This online bravado eventually led to the March 6, 2024, execution of a search warrant at his residence.
The investigation into Wireman's activities was a collaborative effort between various federal and state agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) Toledo Field Office, the Williams County Sheriff's Office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Assistant U.S. Attorney Dexter L. Phillips for the Northern District of Ohio handled the prosecution, underscoring the importance of federal and state cooperation in curbing gun-related offenses.
