An Ohio mother is facing aggravated murder charges after the drowning deaths of her husband and 4-year-old son at Atwood Lake, in a case that authorities are describing as influenced by "spiritual delusions". Ruth Miller, 40, of Millersburg, Ohio, reportedly told investigators that she believed she was acting under divine instruction when she allegedly killed her son, Vincen, and was involved in events leading to her husband Marcus's death. According to Cleveland19, Tuscarawas County prosecutors have charged Miller with two counts of aggravated murder and one count of endangering children, alongside two counts of domestic violence.
The situation unfolded over a weekend at the lake, where, per Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell's press conference details obtained by CBS News, Ruth and Marcus Miller jumped into the water believing they were fulfilling a divine command. Marcus later returned to the lake, where he drowned, and then, tragically, Ruth later placed Vincen into the lake as well. Ruth is also accused of driving a golf cart into the lake with her three other children on board, leading to the response by rangers and deputies.
The case has attracted attention not only for the shocking nature of the allegations but also for the Amish community's involvement. The Millers belonged to this community, known for their separatist, peaceful Christian beliefs and rejection of modern technologies. In a statement provided to CBS News, family members and the Millers' church emphasized that the events "do not reflect our teachings or beliefs" but were the result of mental illness, with acknowledgment that the couple had received professional help in the past.
At the time of the report, Ruth Miller had been hospitalized, and an arraignment date had not been set. She could face life in prison if convicted on the aggravated murder charges. Additional reports from NBC News and Cleveland19 suggest that erratic behavior and statements made by Miller after the incident contributed to the charges. When first responders began to treat her, she was allegedly making concerning statements, including an admission of placing her son in the water to "give him to God", as Sheriff Campbell relayed to Cleveland19.
Autopsies will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death for Vincen and Marcus Miller. Meanwhile, the couple's remaining children, who survived the attempted drowning, are described by Sheriff Campbell as "extremely confused" and distraught over the incident, as described by CBS News. The Millers' church and extended family are reportedly providing support during this difficult time.
