A life-size bronze sculpture honoring Charles Gasham “Gristmill” Jones, one of Oklahoma’s early civic leaders, was unveiled in Oklahoma City yesterday. According to the Oklahoma City government’s news site, the monument, donated by the Oklahoma City-County Historical Society, is located at OKC Fair Park northeast of the Bennett Event Center.

The sculpture, created by local artist LaQuincey Reed, commemorates Jones’ role in Oklahoma history, including his service in the Territorial Legislatures, two terms as mayor of Oklahoma City, and efforts to develop infrastructure and the economy. He founded the towns of Mustang and Jones and led the relocation of the state capital to Oklahoma City.

Jones, born in Illinois in 1856, was active in promoting agriculture, economic development, and railroad construction. He also helped establish the fair that continues to be held in Oklahoma City. The town of Jones, Oklahoma, is named in his honor.

Reed, a University of Oklahoma graduate, has created several public works across the state, including pieces for the Oklahoma State Capitol and Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
