The Louisiana Department of Health has announced the first case this year of West Nile virus infecting a human in Orleans Parish, with the individual afflicted by the more severe neuroinvasive form of the disease, residents are being urged to take precautionary measures to guard against mosquito bites, as the virus is typically spread through the bite of an infected mosquito, specifically the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, known to be active after dark, according to the City of New Orleans.
West Nile virus remains a significant health concern due to its potential to cause serious illness, particularly for those over 65 or with compromised immune systems; the common symptoms of WNV include headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash, yet it's worth noting that the majority of those infected with West Nile virus do not exhibit any symptoms, as reported by the City of New Orleans.
In response to this case, the City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board recommends residents take steps to reduce their risk of exposure, echoing the Department of Health's advice to use EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, moreover, when outdoors, especially between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes thrive, individuals should consider using protective measures such as air conditioning or fans, and ensure homes are fortified against the pests by keeping windows and doors screened.
The City of New Orleans also provides resources for citizens to report mosquito problems and receive assistance, residents can make a service request by calling 311 or online through the nola.gov portal, or they can reach out directly to the Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board by emailing [email protected] or calling (504) 658-2400, these actions are all part of the collaborative effort to manage the mosquito population and minimize the spread of West Nile virus in the community.
