When an unexpected vacancy hit the Parker County Fire Marshal's Office just as the Fourth of July fireworks season revved up, Parker County Emergency Services District No. 1 (ESD 1) stepped into the breach. According to a social media post from Parker County ESD 1, this transition began on July 1 through an interlocal agreement set to continue until September 30 as officials work on a more permanent solution.
In this short time, ESD 1 has impressively fielded 44 calls, which included not only 11 structure fires, but 7 vehicle fires and 7 grass/brush fires; furthermore, it has carried out almost 30 fireworks inspections, all the while maintaining the expected level of public safety. Fire Chief Stephen Watson proudly stated, "This is what effective interlocal cooperation looks like," with the county ensuring necessary support through funding, assets, and equipment for operations.
This interim agreement sees ESD 1 providing crucial services like building inspections, attending development meetings, and conducting safety walkthroughs at schools, shoring up community safety before the new school year commences.
