Westmoreland County has seen a major crackdown on a local drug and firearms trafficking operation with the arrest of four individuals, as announced by the Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday. The extensive investigation, a collaborative effort of multiple law enforcement agencies, intercepted over 47,000 doses of heroin and fentanyl. In a statement reported by WPXI, Sunday highlighted the continuum of the opioid crisis in the Commonwealth and nationwide, exacerbated by fentanyl distribution and the accompanying firearms used by dealers.
The arrests have brought to light the severe implications of the drug trade, assisted by an undercover officer over several months, which led to the illegal sale of guns and narcotics. According to information from CBS News Pittsburgh, those charged include David Jefferies, 34, James Womack, 33, and Shelton Payne, 34, all of whom are facing charges for illegal possession of a firearm and drug trafficking, heavily due to their prior felony convictions that bar them from gun ownership.
Furthermore, 41-year-old Andre Ellis-Barnes from Wilkinsburg was charged with the alleged sale of drugs to an undercover officer, expanding the operation's scope beyond the immediate vicinity of Westmoreland County. The collaborative agencies, which included the Office of the Attorney General, the Westmoreland County Drug Task Force, and several local police departments, signify the concerted push against the dangerous combination of drug and firearm offenses plaguing communities.
During the investigation, authorities executed a search warrant at the residence of Jefferies, discovering not only a Glock 9mm handgun but also a significant amount of narcotics, totalling approximately 382 grams of fentanyl and black tar heroin.
